This is a product of my wanting to combine flameworked elements with a blown vessel from the hotshop. Though Im unable to post it for the time being the first one in this series was far more successful. I've always been big on the whole shock art vibe and I really wanted the viewer take one look and get chills. There's just something so creepy about a bunch of spiders crawling on stuff. Anyways, the trouble was coming up with a shape to reference all the spiders. I chose the hour glass with reference to the hour glass marking on the female black widow spider (not quite the same kind of hour glass though).

Widow Vase II by ~catchymuffin After dealing with spiders all weekend, this definitely creeped me out, even though it is a wonderfully simple design. A very unique piece, as are all the deviations in this gallery! (Featured by `dedredhed)

Very cool design, love the spiders. Contrast of opaque and transparent works really well - suggesting that the spiders are creepily all in the mind ;)

Excellent! I liked your other spider too, but I think these are much better for this piece. Very nice hour glass.

You succeeded in the chills affect for sure....I hate spiders....but I love this piece. The simple elgance of the vase combined with the subtle menace of the spiders evokes some powerful emotional responses.

I'm amazed at how well you captured the look of an image frozen in time. The spiders look like they could continue moving at any moment. Well Done!

Ya I still have a pic to upload of the first exploration of spiders on my work where the spiders were white instead of sandblasted clear. You should check back in a few days, thanks for the compliment by the way...

It's nice to see more glass represented in the DD's. Congrats!

Are those spiders soft glass then, I'm assuming?


I think black spiders would be much creepier. Would add an added realistic look to them. The clear ones, and even sandblasted... Don't quite have that effect on me.

yeah that creeped me out lol infact, in order to read your info/entry i had to scroll down to get the picture out of the way. urrrgh *shudder* and when i saw the preview on dd i immediately guessed that the hourglass is a refletion of the black widows colouring, so well done :handshake:
